Beckham leaves Wimbledon's Robson smiling

Wimbledon’s Laura Robson left the All England Club on Friday smiling after a chance meeting with England football star David Beckham.

The 16-year-old tennis star crashed out of the girl’s singles with a 5-7 6-7 defeat to Japan’s Sachie Ishizu moments after Twickenham’s Oliver Golding had done the same in the boy’s singles.

Beckham had been in the Royal Box on centre court to watch Andy Murray - who shares the same management team as the former Manchester United midfielder - lose in straight sets to eventual champion Rafael Nadal 4-6, 6-7, 4-6.

And Robson’s chance encounter with the 35-year-old ensured her time at SW19 ended with a silver lining.

“I got a picture with him,” she beamed after fielding questions over her defeat.

“That brightened up my day so much.

She added: “I didn't feel like I played my best tennis. But, credit to her, she played well.

“That’s tennis. Some days, you don't play as well as you want to and it doesn't work out the way you want it to.”

Golding crashed out 2-6, 2-6 to Australian Benjamin Mitchell after a successful run at the All England Club brought him to the attention of the nation.

And the 16-year-old admits the experience will be a driving force behind his future career.

“I knew at some point I was going to have these great weeks, and at some points you're going to have bad weeks as well,” he added.

“It makes you want to keep going. Makes you want to have more of these weeks. You've just got to keep that in your head the whole time.”
