Shipperley looking to make quick progress

Neil Shipperley admits he faces a battle against time as he looks to sculpt a capable Walton Casuals squad to start the Ryman Division One South campaign.

The Stags got their home pre-season games under way with a 3-1 defeat to League Two side Lincoln City on Friday night.

And, having only taken over at the Waterside a month ago, the former Chelsea and Crystal Palace striker has some tough decisions to make - and fast.

Shipperley said: “The main problem is going to be the fact that we do not a reserve side this season, so it is going to be very difficult to keep everybody happy.

“At the moment we have 34 players with us, which for a side in our league is ridiculous.

“It is proving awkward as there is very little time to run the rule over players and I am pretty much having to judge players based on seeing them in one game.

“You have to show some decorum and give players plenty of notice if you are going to let them go and it is bit of a player’s market out there at the moment.

“I would like to get a settled side sooner rather than later and that means some quick decisions will have to be made.”

Charlie Hill was on target for Walton against the Imps, and the Stags boss reckoned the performance showed some of his messages are getting through.

Shipperley added: “We got the ball down and passed it a bit and that was very pleasing.

“I do not ask the players to do anything different in a game than we do in training and that is the way I want to go about things.

“Results are irrelevant at this stage and there was an awful lot we did right which we can take forward.”
